Joining me on the show today is Deacon Ed Shoener, a deacon of the Diocese of Scranton, PA and the president of the Catholic Association of Catholic Mental Health Ministers to discuss mental illness and suicide. Deacon Ed beautifully shares about his daughter’s struggles with mental illness and death by suicide in 2016.
We discuss how the Church’s pastoral approaches to suicide have changed, how therapists need better diagnostic tools to catch suicidality, how we feel helpless in the face of great suffering, how parishes can better meet the needs of parishioners who have lost a loved one due to mental illness, and how clergy can be more vulnerable about their own struggles.
