089 – Nathaniel Binversie on Exodus 90

Exodus 90 is a program aimed at helping men grow in their spiritual and ascetical practices. It is built around small groups, regular prayer exercises, and giving up a long list of creature comforts. It has grown tremendously over the last few years. And while, I hear many people talk about its positives, I do have some questions about how it fits within the Church’s larger understanding of the spiritual life.

Joining me on the show to talk about those questions is Nathaniel Binversie, director of content for Exodus 90. We talk about the history of the program and how it has evolved over the years. We further discuss the difference between passive purgation vs active purgation and the purpose of giving things up as part of our spiritual growth. We debate the merits of pushing yourself too hard in your ascetical practices, how to find balance in life, and how Exodus fits within the Church’s liturgical calendar and spiritual traditions. We also discuss the need to incorporating almsgiving and service into any spiritual discipline.
